Engineering natural isolates of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for applications in lignocellulosic biorefineries
In 2003, Riaan den Haan earned his PhD from Stellenbosch University in South Africa, developing a heterologous protein expression system for Pichia stipitis. Subsequently as a postdoctoral researcher at the same institution, he collaborated with researchers from Dartmouth College (USA) and VTT Technical Research Centre (Finland) to create yeast strains capable of producing bioethanol via fermentation of sugar polymers found in plant biomass. Since 2014, Prof. Den Haan has been employed by the University of the Western Cape (South Africa). As principal investigator, he leads a research group dedicated to developing yeast strains proficient in converting biomass into second-generation biofuels and higher value chemical building blocks. This involves enhancing strain robustness, improving the secretion of foreign proteins, and facilitating non-sterile fermentations. Prof. Den Haan has maintained collaborative research endeavours with groups at Stellenbosch University, and he has established a longstanding partnership with Professor Tomohisa Hasunuma of Kobe University, Japan.
