Björn is an industrial microbiologist, studied Molecular Microbiology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, NL and obtained a PhD in Environmental Microbiology from Auckland University, NZ. Currently active as the Technical Director Europe for LanzaTech EU B.V., based in The Netherlands. Over the last 15 years Björn has been involved in the discovery, development and scaling of the LanzaTech gas fermentation process in New Zealand (5 yrs), China (1 yr), Japan, India, USA (7 yrs) and The Netherlands and Belgium (2 yrs). After extensive development the first full commercial facility startup was in China (May 2018) at a Shougang steel mill where he was responsible for the first production runs. In Europe, the first commercial scale facility is the Steelanol plant located at the ArcelorMittal steelworks in Ghent, Belgium. The first successful production runs were announced in 2023 and Steelanol is now supplying the European market with recycled carbon Ethanol under CarbonSmartTM name.
