Understanding drought tolerance and tradeoffs for food security under future climates
Alan Schulman is Research Professor of Plant Biotechnology, Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) and Head of Research and Group Leader, Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki. He is Immediate Past President of the European Plan Science Organisation (EPSO), and current co-chair of its Biotech Working Group. His group pursues the basis of drought resilience and other sustainability traits in barley, faba bean, and oat, with interests also in seed quality traits, and develops tools for precision breeding. His group also applies genetics, genomics and cell biology to understand the processes of genome dynamics. They play a central role in the faba bean and oat pan-genome projects, as they did earlier for the Brachypodium and barley reference genomes, having contributed to five others. He holds an MSc, MPhil, and PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology (Yale University, PhD 1986) and BAs in Botany and in Art History (Duke University, 1979).
